Rosa damascena, also known as the Damask rose, is the rose mostly associated with Bulgaria’s rose oil industry. For centuries, Bulgarian rose farmers have cultivated these oil-bearing roses and developed an expertise to turn the flowers into valuable ingredients such as rose oil, rose water and other rose-oil-based products.
The rose itself is strongly connected to the Rose Valley in central Bulgaria, particularly around the areas: Kazanlak, Karlovo and Strelcha. Although its history began in the Western and Central parts of Asia, the rose has been brought to Bulgaria where it has found favourable climate conditions and has become one of the main industries for the region.
